Black Sherif is a 'PopStar' in new single

Ghana’s most compelling voice, Black Sherif, has officially inaugurated his 2026 campaign with the release of PopStar. Arriving on the heels of his massively successful sophomore album Iron Boy, the new single marks a pivot toward a more introspective and gritty exploration of his identity as a superstar. Produced by his longtime collaborator Joker Nharnah, the track sees Blacko reclaiming the energy that first made him a household name while acknowledging the weight of his newfound celebrity status.

PopStar is a sonic departure from the upbeat danceability of some of his recent features. Instead, it leans into the Street-Soul and high-life fusion that has become his signature. The lyrics are deeply personal, with Sherif reflecting on his journey from the streets to the main stage. He speaks about the internal conflict of wanting to remain the artist and entertainer he dreamed of being in his youth, while the city and the industry demand he become a specific type of pop star. His vocal delivery is emotive, shifting between soulful crooning and the intense, rap-adjacent energy that defines his best work.

The release is accompanied by a striking visualizer that mirrors the song’s darker, more cinematic aesthetic. With the success of his Iron Boy tour, which saw him sell out venues across North America and Europe, PopStar feels like a victory lap that is also a warning. It’s a track that reminds listeners that behind the chart-topping numbers and sold-out stadiums is a 24-year-old artist still navigating the complexities of his own narrative.

Distributed via RBA and EMPIRE, the single has already broken records for Ghanaian releases in 2026, quickly climbing to the top of the charts in West Africa and the UK. Black Sherif continues to prove that he is more than just a fleeting trend, he is a generational talent who is fundamentally changing the sound of African hip-hop.
