Enigmatic sound maestro and Mad Over You crooner, Runtown, who is famed for his ability to blend sonic subtlety with lyrical depth, has just released Do Me. Coming on the heels of his last single Flow, Do Me marks his assertive reentry into the music scene after a long hiatus, its also his second official release since his 2022 cult-favorite album Signs.
Do Me feels like a warm embrace where Flow feels like a full bodied stretch after a long slumber. The melodies are soothing, carefree and deeply reflective. The thumping bass embodies a warmth and intimacy, pulling you close and evoking the feeling you would get from flipping through a lover’s diary, the words dripping with vulnerability and late-night honesty.
Runtown innate ability to remain the sole player in the lane he has created continues to set him apart. His ever calm voice simply resonates. and with Do Me, he reminds us why we fell in love with his music in the first place. It’s a song for long drives, late nights, comfortable silences and treasured company. A melodic meditation on indulgence from a person who has seen it all and somehow still wants more.
Fadah’s production on this, is a hypnotic, slow burn built on laid-back Afropop rhythms, laced with nostalgic undertones, and bolstered by soft, heartfelt background vocals. Do Me is a cool chant, Runtown’s echoing voice washes over you with the wistful tone of a person describing a fond memory. The delivery of the lyrics has him speaking directly to the listener, regaling the spellbinding hold of the woman who “like the devil” is “using him” straight into the listener’s ear. He is neither begging for attention, nor performing for applause, he is simply speaking from the heart- laying out soft-spoken musings on vanity, vulnerability, and the curated thrill of luxury living. In a time when the Nigerian music scene seems obsessed with bigger, louder, faster, Runtown dares to go against the grain. Do Me is a subtle flex, a thoughtful exhale; an effortless display of vulnerability. And in that intimacy lies its magic.
