Lagos Fringe 2025: Towards The Celebration of Excellence In Multidisciplinary Arts

As an expression of human realities, art is demonstrated through a variety of initiatives such as festivals, exhibitions, screenings, and talent and empowerment programmes. In Lagos, a bustling metropolis and the entertainment capital of Africa, there exists a host of such initiatives targeted at representing and projecting the vibrant cultural image and dynamic identities of inhabitants and visitors in the city. One of them is Lagos Fringe Festival, a multidisciplinary arts festival that spotlights and celebrates talent in visual and non-visual forms.

The upcoming 8th edition of the festival, themed “Hybrid Identities: Merging Boundaries”, is scheduled to run from 18th-23rd November, 2025. In a world where cultures constantly intersect, borders get increasingly blurred and human identities morph into complex shapes, this theme examines the heterogeneous and eclectic nature of human existence. Conversations at the week-long event will revolve around identity politics, cultural fusion, broader crossings and digital identities. The 2025 edition, thus, welcomes artists, performers, and audiences within and across the city to an exhilarating creative adventure.

At this year’s event, there will be performance art shows featuring thought-provoking plays that address social issues and laughter-evoking humorous acts. From traditional theatre to experimental and contemporary plays, the theatrical exhibitions will cut across different genres and styles. There will also be an arts and craft market, officially described as “a treasure trove of unique and handcrafted items.” The market will make available both traditional Nigerian clothing and accessories, and contemporary art pieces. To achieve this the festival will provide opportunities for local artisans and businesses to showcase their work.

As part of its plans, the festival will include vibrant night events that involve music performances, spoken word sessions, and conversations that reflect on the realities of arts in Nigeria. Such nights will also be an opportunity for networking and collaboration, with industry leaders like producers, directors and talent scouts in attendance. While information about specific activities lined up for the week remain undisclosed, the festival’s call for submission of short films is still ongoing and will close on 13th June.

Considered one of the largest outdoor festivals in West Africa and one of the vibrant multidisciplinary arts festivals in Africa, Lagos Fringe Festival was launched by Kenneth Uphopho in 2018 with the mission of supporting and showcasing artists in diverse ways. While the initiative is committed to supporting talent, it also encourages professional growth through engaging panels, developmental workshops and invaluable networking avenues between domestic and international creatives. Through its developmental programmes, the festival creates room for creative entrepreneurship and career development—with a focus on becoming the catalyst of artistic evolution.
