Mayorkun balances reality & rhythm on new single 'Reason 2 Japa'

Award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter Mayorkun has kicked off the year with a brand new single titled Reason 2 Japa, produced by the gifted BMH. The track serves as his first official release of 2025, following his 2024 collaboration Innocent with Fireboy DML.

On Reason 2 Japa, Mayorkun tackles a subject that resonates with many Nigerians—the desire to leave the country in search of better opportunities. The word “japa,” which has become popular slang for escaping hardship, perfectly captures the mood of the track. He addresses the harsh realities of economic instability and poor governance, but rather than dwelling in gloom, Mayorkun wraps the message in upbeat, danceable production.

The song is a clever juxtaposition of serious themes and playful delivery. Mayorkun’s witty lyrics and infectious melodies make Reason 2 Japa both thought-provoking and club-ready. It’s the kind of track that gets you moving while subtly stirring reflection—a balance Mayorkun pulls off effortlessly.

With BMH’s bouncy, Afro-fusion production providing the backdrop, Mayorkun once again proves his ability to blend social commentary with commercial appeal. Reason 2 Japa is a soundtrack for the times, capturing the mood of a generation while still keeping the energy high.

Whether you’re dancing to the beat or nodding in agreement with the lyrics, one thing is certain—Mayorkun has delivered a track that speaks to the heart while keeping the feet moving.
